Legal notice

What to Include in a Legal Notice

Even if your local laws aren't as strict as the EU's, providing this information builds significant customer trust. You should generally include:

  • Business Name: Your official registered company name (or your own name if you are a sole trader).

  • Physical Address: Your registered business address (not a P.O. Box).

  • Contact Information: A valid email address and phone number where you can be reached for inquiries.

  • Registration Details: Your company registration number or trade register number.

  • VAT/Tax ID: Your VAT identification number (if applicable in your region).

  • Regulatory Authority: If your business is in a regulated industry (e.g., travel, medical, or real estate), you may need to list the regulatory body overseeing your operations.

How to Create This in Shopify

You do not need a special app to create this page. You can add it directly into your store's structure:

  1. Create a New Page:

    • Go to Online Store > Pages in your Shopify admin.

    • Click Add page.

    • Title it "Legal Notice" (or Impressum if you are primarily targeting German-speaking markets).

  2. Add Your Details:

    • Enter the information listed above into the content box.

    • Use clear, professional formatting.

  3. Link in Footer:

    • Go to Online Store > Navigation.

    • Select your Footer menu.

    • Add the "Legal Notice" page you just created so it is visible to customers on every page of your store.

⚠️ Important Considerations

  • This is not legal advice: I am an AI, not a lawyer. Laws regarding online business vary wildly depending on where your company is based and where your customers live. If you are operating in the EU or other highly regulated regions, consult with a legal professional to ensure your notice meets all local statutes.

  • Don't "Copy-Paste" Blindly: While you can look at competitors' pages for inspiration, do not copy their text. Their legal obligations may be different from yours based on their business structure and location.

  • Combine with Other Policies: A Legal Notice is separate from your Privacy Policy, Terms of Service, and Refund Policy. While Shopify generates those automatically for you under Settings > Policies, the "Legal Notice" is usually a standalone page you create manually using the steps above.
